MakeMKV is your one-click solution to convert video that you own into free and patents-unencumbered format that can be played everywhere. MakeMKV is a format converter, otherwise called "transcoder". The only thing it does (and does well) - it converts the video clips from proprietary (and usually encrypted) disc into a set of MKV files, preserving most information but not changing it in any way. The MKV format can store multiple video/audio tracks with all meta-information and preserve chapters. There are many players that can play MKV files nearly on all platforms, and there are tools to convert MKV files to many formats, including DVD and Blu-ray discs.
FeaturesReads DVD, Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs

All features (including Blu-ray decryption and processing) are free during BETA.
System RequirementsWindows Vista/XP/2000
512 MB of RAM, 1 GB recommended. MakeMKV will run on computers with low memory amount but conversion speed will be very slow.
3 MB of hard drive space for program files.
Adequate hard drive space for converted content. Typical DVD movie takes 6 GB on hard drive. Typical Blu-ray movie takes 17 GB.
Beta version restrictionsMakeMKV BETA has several major restrictions. Program is time-limited -- it will stop functioning after 60 days. You can always download the latest version from makemkv.com that will reset the expiration date.
Blu-ray and HD-DVD have very limited support in beta version - most discs will fail to open and not all audio and subtitle tracks will be preserved. DVD discs are fully supported.
Computer administrator privileges are required to run the beta version. This is limitation of Windows SCSI application programming interface. The full version of MakeMKV will not require administrator privileges to run.
Aside from restrictions above, the program is fully functional. Produced MKV files are not degraded in any way and have no time or usage restrictions.
